The National Innovation Foundation (NIF) of India is gearing up for yet another Innovation Conference on the 27th of this month. The competition, to be held at Agni College of Technology, Chennai, will host over 4000 student innovators from across the nation and also delegates from eight foreign universities. The organization has designed & hosted 96 Regional Innovation Conferences and three National Innovation Conferences across 36 cities in India till date where students competed to showcased their innovative creations.
Being organised since 2008, IGNITE is an annual competition for students’ ideas and innovations conducted by NIF in partnership with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). All students up to Standard 12 in or out of school in India are eligible to participate in the competition. The IGNITE awards are announced on October 15, the birthday of Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, which is celebrated as the Children’s Creativity and Innovation Day by NIF. In 2015, IGNITE competition was renamed as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE competition in the memory of Dr Kalam so that the creative children continue to draw inspiration from his spirit.
These innovations were judged based on the practicality, creativity & sustainability by technical experts from diverse fields. The winners of the innovation contests are selected for the Tamil reality TV E7ham Arivu – (7th Sense), the first show for young student innovators to showcase their talent. The program was ranked Number 1 in DD’s ratings, officially garnering a daily viewership of 360,000 households on an average; a feat incomparable in the history of the network.
Ignite-India has attained astronomical success and has been recognized by the United Nations as one of the top socio-economic educational initiatives that has utilized innovation and technology as a catalyst for young student entrepreneurs across the nation. In early 2016, Ignite India partnered with the United Nations to increase the show’s reach and impact. Dr APJ Kalam’s guidance paved the way to create an innovation ecosystem for the youth community. It is the mission of all at NIF to fulfill his vision of integrating media, technology and alternate methods of teaching to enhance adaptive learning in Indian education system.
